Growing up there was not a lot of Chicana role models to look up too, or a Mexican one for that matter, or even women of color. Many characters in tv shows, dolls, packaging were/are white looking. I got introduced to Frida Kahlo at an early age. I would be sent to Mexico to fly by myself and visit family in Mexico City. Meanwhile, in many media posts, I would see different images of her and the infamous unibrow she had. Because of all the media, I saw there I looked into who this woman was and why she is plastered everywhere. I quickly learned about her and her badass story and how she came to be Frida, by living a complicated and artistic life. Frida inspired me as a child in a couple of different ways. First and foremost to unleash my artistic side, to let it flow and be shown for others to see and grow with technique. She also taught me to not let anyone get in my way including men. This woman even when she got a divorce to Diego was able to make her own living and be productive artistically travel and be recognized for the work she was doing. Her work has lived on to this day and she has left a legacy on Chicano/a/Mexican art and globally. She has left her mark on many individuals like myself (chingonas). By being able to be in her famous Casa Azul, you feel the presence and can truly visualize it when you see her artwork, clothing style, interior designing of this women. In her house, every piece is carefully thought out with meanings behind it, as well as making the garden patios as well. For me putting a critical lens, I don't see how I could have thought any differently at the time compared to now. Now I just know more and more about her making her even better in my head than before, she dd have some faults but knew a lot more than made up for that. Her legacy and imprint will never die out and be an icon for centuries to come, to this day there is a lot of marketing and prints and use of Frida like recently seen in the Disney movie COCO by having her very own character within the movie. She is a feminist of her time and has shown qualities to fight social justice issues at the time, overall badass and something that has been instilled in me since my childhood and for that I am grateful.
